Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The new BMW M3 sedan has a more driver-focused experience and is capable of up to 503hp.

Like the new M4 coupe, the 2021 BMW M3 sedan is equipped with a 3.0-liter inline twin-turbocharged engine. The regular version sends 473 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels. The six-speed manual gearbox is the only gearbox available. The M3 Competition’s engine is more powerful, producing 503 horsepower and 479 lb-ft torque (far outpacing the Porsche Cayman and similar to the comparably priced Mercedes AMG C 63, but with a higher rating), and offers an eight-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is standard, but will eventually provide all-wheel drive. Each M3 also has an adaptive damper and adjustable braking feel. The car can also be equipped with stronger carbon ceramic brakes, which feature gold-plated brake calipers (these are certainly not your standard brakes).

Real-world mileage and fuel economy.

The EPA estimates the 2021 M3 sedan’s fuel economy to be 16 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway.

  • 3.0-liter BMW M TwinPower Turbo 473-hp inline 6-cylinder engine. Combines two mono-scroll turbochargers with variable valve control (Double-VANOS and Valvetronic) and high-precision direct injection.
  • Auto Start-Stop function for both automatic and six speed manual transmission.
  • Optimized aerodynamics including Air Curtains in front apron and Air Breathers behind front fenders with integrated M side gills and badging (notice how they pop on our video featuring the 2021 BMW M3 Competition in Isle of Man Green Metallic).
  • Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), including Brake Fade Compensation (an assist for your premium summer tires in San Diego), Start-off Assistant, Brake Drying, and Brake Stand-by features; with M Dynamic Mode. Available on all BMW m3 models, from standard sedan to the performance orientated competition trim.
  • Adaptive M Suspension with electronically controlled damper and aluminum suspension arms and wheel carriers.
  • Standard Active Driving Assistant includes Lane Departure Warning, Active Blind Spot Detection, Active Lane Keeping Assistant, and more for peace of mind on every drive.

Cargo, interior and comfort.

The interior of the sixth generation M3 is similar to our current BMW 3 Series, but vastly different than the previous generation (besides the new grille). This means that the layout, passenger space and external visibility of the M3 are the same as its more pedestrian counterparts. Although M cars are known for their friendliest performance, they also meet or exceed the top 3 series of materials and manufacturing quality. Of course, M3 has more carbon fiber and micro suede decoration, bringing a bolder beauty. The driver faces a set of 12.3-inch digital instruments that will switch to M View in the most sporty driving mode; they are activated by the protruding red buttons on the M3’s thick heated steering wheel. Switching to M view will add a gear indicator and replace the normal tachometer with an easier-to-read tachometer. Provides a set of lightweight, sturdy front seats (standard in races) that provide incredible support without sacrificing too much comfort, although this may not be the case on long road trips.

Convenience, compatibility, and connectivity – the latest technology in the All-New BMW M3 Sedan covers everything you could possibly need for a fully engaged driving experience.

  • BMW Live Cockpit Professional displays your speed, navigation, and more using an M-specific design. If you want a simplified experience, switch to the focused TRACK mode (there are several drive mode options for you to easily select, adjusting drive settings as well as what you see on the  12.3 Inch Digital instrument Cluster). From the driver’s seat, you’ll love active blind spot monitoring and access to adaptive cruise control and stability control, an upgrade from previous models.
  • Sync your smartphone to your BMW M3 Competition with wireless Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™compatibility for complete access to your entertainment, apps, and more. This is truly a game-changer, not just for simplicity, but for safety, especially when paired with gesture controls.
  • The available Remote Engine Start lets you start your car from the comfort of your own home, so you’re always ready to go.
  • Advanced Vehicle & Key Memory includes most recently used climate-control temperature and air-distribution settings; exterior mirror and power seat settings; audio tone settings and radio presets; central-locking preferences; and lighting preferences.
  • Automatic 3-zone Climate Control including micro-filter and automatic air recirculation, so every standard seat can set their own atmosphere, whether in the standard sedan or competition models.
“It’s much like the regular 3 Series sedan with the expected array of storage bins and cupholders. The trunk holds 13 cubic feet of stuff, and you can expand the area by folding down the rear 40/20/40-split seat sections. The carbon-fiber sport seats have no back pockets.” – Edmunds
