Known as BMW AG in Germany, the BMW Group is an incorporated entity that’s owned by shareholders. Bayerische Motoren Werke Aktiengesellschaft is the BMW Group’s full name in German. “Bayerische Motoren Werke” translates to “Bavarian Motor Works,” and “Aktiengesellschaft” is the German term for a public limited company. The shares of these types of companies are available to the general public and are traded on a public stock exchange. 

Who Owns BMW Shares?

The Quandt family owns half of the BMW Group’s shares, and are long-time shareholders. The other half is a public float and is owned by public investors. Here’s a quick breakdown of the group’s shares: 

  • 29%: Owned by Stefan Quandt — A German engineer and industrialist. 
  • 21%: Owned by Susanne Klatten — A successful investor and Stefan Quandt’s sibling. 
  • 50%: Public Float — Owned by public investors.

Where is BMW Made?

BMW owns the largest manufacturing facility in Dingolfing, Germany. In fact, you’ll find most of the brand’s plants in Germany, although they have locations in multiple countries. You can visit and tour the following production facilities:
