How to Winterize Your BMW

Snow Tire

As temperatures begin to drop this winter, it is important to ensure that your vehicle is protected from the elements. There are several ways that you can winterize your BMW so that it is ready for the colder months ahead.

Check Your Tire Pressure

Your TPMS should keep tabs on your vehicle’s tire pressure, which can decrease when temperatures get cooler. If you have received an alert, select “Perform Reset.” If all of your tires on the screen are illuminated in green, you are good to go. If your tire pressure is not where it should be, inflate your tires to the proper level. Filling your tires with nitrogen can help to prevent pressure fluctuations that happen with the change of the season.

Fill Your Antifreeze

You want to make sure that there is enough antifreeze in the coolant. Freezing can cause damage to the engine. This is especially important if you have added water to the coolant. Remember to use the type of antifreeze recommended for your vehicle by the manufacturer.

Change Your Wiper Blades

Inclement weather can lead to low visibility on the roads of San Marcos and beyond. If you have noticed that your wiper blades have been squeaking or leaving streaks, it is time for them to be replaced.

Clean the Inside and Outside of Your Windshield

Use a glass cleaner to remove the dirty film on the inside and outside of your windshield, as well as any dust, fingerprints, and residue from cigarette smoke. A filmy windshield can decrease visibility especially when driving in the dark when the glare from lights is more pronounced. Listed below are a few helpful tips:

  • Dirty windows will fog up quicker than clean ones.
  • Use a glass cleaner and microfiber cloth to clean your windshield. Using a rag or dry sponge is less effective.

Check Your Battery

Car batteries usually need to be replaced every six years, so if it has been awhile since your vehicle received a new battery, it may be beneficial to upgrade. Have the battery tested by a professional at the BMW of Escondido service center to provide an estimate on your current battery’s lifespan. You do not want to get stranded in the cold with a dead battery.
