How Do I Program My BMW Key Fob?

Programming Additional BMW Key Fobs

If you currently have a working BMW key fob and you want to program additional keys so you can have a spare or give them to other drivers in your household, follow these instructions:

1. With the working key fob as well as all additional key fobs you want to program, sit in the driver’s seat of your BMW with all windows and doors closed.
2. Insert the working key into the ignition and turn it to position 1 (aka turn it but don’t start the engine). The BMW dashboard lights should turn on.
3. Remove the key from the ignition.
4. On that same key, hold down the unlock button while pressing the lock button 3 times, then release the unlock button.
5. The doors should automatically lock and unlock in confirmation
6. Repeat step #4, this time with a new unprogrammed key.
7. Again the doors should lock and unlock.
8. Repeat for any additional keys, and you’re done!

Programming a New Key from Scratch

If you don’t have a working key fob and you need to program a BMW key fob replacement, follow the instructions below:

1. Insert key into the ignition and turn it to position 1 and back rapidly 5 times.
2. Remove the key
3. Hold the unlock button and press the BMW logo 3 times, then release the unlock button.
4. If you have additional keys you’d like to program at this time, repeat step 3 within 30 seconds from the original key programming.
5. Turn on the ignition to complete the process.
